Most changes in the breast (in fact 9 out of 10) aren’t due to breast cancer. But if you do notice a change, it’s important to get it checked by a doctor. Early detection of breast cancer means treatment has a much better chance of success.

Breast awareness and screening

Women aged 50 to 74 are encouraged to have a mammogram every two years, but should understand the limitations of the test and make an informed personal choice about breast screening.

Normal breast changes

Breasts change throughout life, often due to changes in hormone levels.

Common breast problems

Many women experience common breast issues. Conditions that will need follow-up include:

  • Atypical ductal hyperplasia (a condition that occurs in the lining of the milk ducts)
  • Ductal carcinoma in situ (untreated, this can invade nearby breast tissue)
  • Lobular carcinoma in situ (an uncommon benign change)

    Investigating breast changes

If there’s an unusual change there are three common tests used.
